Ron Burkhardt: The Artist Redefining Contemporary Luxury from New York to Palm Beach
In today’s contemporary art world, originality is rare. Creating an entirely new artistic movement is even rarer. Yet internationally recognized artist Ron Burkhardt has accomplished that distinction multiple times throughout a career that continues to captivate collectors, interior designers, architects, and luxury homeowners from New York City to the Hamptons, Palm Beach, and Miami.
As the founder of Notism, creator of LetterScapes, and originator of Earth Art, Burkhardt has developed a visual language unlike any other artist working today. His work blends bold color, symbolism, memory, language, and design into museum-worthy statement pieces that have become increasingly sought after by collectors looking for art with both visual impact and intellectual depth.
Over the course of his remarkable career, Burkhardt has exhibited in more than 100 exhibitions worldwide, earned over 200 awards for creative excellence, and studied at both the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Fine Art in New York. His work has been recognized by museums, cultural institutions, luxury developers, prominent collectors, and design professionals who appreciate both the originality of his artistic vision and the sophistication of its execution.

With artwork featured in museums, public institutions, luxury residences, hospitals, and private collections nationwide, Burkhardt’s career has evolved into one of the most distinctive success stories in contemporary American art. His paintings are celebrated not only for their artistic innovation but also for their ability to transform architectural spaces, making them favorites among designers and homeowners seeking artwork that creates conversation and elevates interiors.
From Manhattan penthouses and Hamptons estates to Palm Beach waterfront residences and Miami’s vibrant luxury developments, Burkhardt’s work has become synonymous with sophisticated contemporary living.
Entrepreneur Weekly recently sat down with Ron Burkhardt to discuss his creative journey, the evolution of his groundbreaking art movements, and why his work continues to resonate with collectors around the world.

Q&A WITH RON BURKHARDT
Q: Your artwork has become highly recognizable throughout New York, the Hamptons, Palm Beach, and Miami. What do you believe collectors connect with most when they first encounter your work?
Ron Burkhardt: I think it’s a combination of rich colors and bold visual impact. I grew up in a small Michigan town highlighted by the Cascades, one of the world’s largest man-made colored waterfalls. I walked past them every day on the way to and from school, and the rich, vivid colors were constantly changing, with fountains shooting spray into the air. Orchestras played below and fireflies flickered on the hillsides. I believe that early connection to rare aesthetics was etched into my soul, leading me to assume such serene beauty and rich colors were part of everyone’s life experience and forming the basis for the vibrant art I would create years later.
Q: As the founder of Notism and creator of multiple original art movements, how important is originality in today’s contemporary art market?
Ron Burkhardt: As Ray Charles always said, “You’ve got to be an original.” With so many artists vying for exposure, you can’t risk following the herd. Even if certain styles are commanding major prices, if you’re not the first, your work is greatly devalued, no matter how good the craftsmanship. One of the harshest critiques an artist can hear is, “It’s derivative.”
So I consciously avoid creating anything that is currently trending, knowing that eventually sticking to a unique point of view and unexpected approach to art will resonate with the right people. Top collectors clearly try to outdo each other, and there’s no better coup for them than having something distinctive on their wall that their peers haven’t seen and can’t acquire.
Like the unmistakably unique works of Anselm Kiefer, Basquiat, and Pollock, Notism art is a fusion of my early writing career contrasted with later artistic symbols and iconography. Notism refers to “art of the note” and exalts my daily memory fragments, forming a historical canvas of life experiences, dated and signed whenever and wherever I finish a work.

Q: Many architects and interior designers are drawn to your work. What makes your paintings particularly effective in luxury residential and commercial environments?
Ron Burkhardt: The scale and impact of Earth Art is one reason. These are large paintings I create outdoors on lawns, desert floors, fields, and natural landscapes where I can throw paint, add indigenous soil, introduce water, and allow the sun to bleach and bake the work for weeks. I often say that I let nature do the painting while I guide the process.
Many Earth Art works measure six by ten feet or even eight by twelve feet, making them ideal statement pieces for lobbies, foyers, luxury residences, and hospitality environments.
Architects are especially drawn to my LetterScapes because of their inherent architectural qualities. The hard edges, geometric forms, and precise lines mirror the structures they design.
Each LetterScape forms words through my own abstract alphabet, allowing collectors to commission names, places, cities, or meaningful words that become highly personalized works of art.
Q: Your work often serves as the focal point of a room. How do you approach creating art that can transform a space?
Ron Burkhardt: I start by understanding the energy of the space and identifying what naturally draws the eye. I take measurements, photographs, and evaluate the colors and architecture before determining what will have the greatest visual impact.
If it’s a commission, collaboration is important. I enjoy understanding what resonates with the client. The artwork should feel empowering, inspiring, and harmonious within the environment.
One memorable project was a large-scale commission for the Concierge Club at The Breakers in Palm Beach. The work incorporated colors representing the ocean, pools, golf course, beach, and architecture of the iconic property. The result became a focal point that celebrated the essence of The Breakers while creating a powerful visual statement.

Q: LetterScapes introduced an entirely new visual language through your abstract alphabet. How did that concept evolve?
Ron Burkhardt: LetterScapes emerged from a life-changing challenge. After suffering a detached retina and macula in California, I underwent a lengthy surgery followed by months of recovery with limited mobility.
Unable to create art in my usual way, I began sketching and doodling. The first design I created spelled ATLANTA through abstract blocks of color. It was unlike anything I had done before.
When I showed it to my New York dealer, he immediately encouraged me to pursue the concept because it was so original.
That encouragement led to an entirely new body of work. What started as small drawings eventually grew into monumental paintings that have become one of the most recognized aspects of my career.
Q: You’ve successfully exhibited and collected followers in New York, the Hamptons, Palm Beach, and Miami. What makes those markets especially exciting for contemporary art?
Ron Burkhardt: Being East Coast cities, you can pretty well draw a straight line from north to south. They all operate on the same psychic energy and intellectual plane. It’s a mindset that values culture, knowledge, and aesthetics. A natural outgrowth of those qualities leads to the pursuit of beauty and environmental harmony.
Many of these people have second or third homes, love color, appreciate craftsmanship, and live high-energy lifestyles. They want to populate those walls with unique art that makes a statement about their personal tastes. The fact that these coastal markets attract affluent collectors makes them especially receptive to acquiring significant contemporary artwork.

Q: What advice would you give someone purchasing their first significant contemporary artwork?
Ron Burkhardt: Buy what you love. Buy what makes a statement about you and your lifestyle. Buy work that moves and inspires you. Buy work with colors that reflect your personality.
Start small and build your collection as you gain confidence. You can never know where investment values will go, so as long as you value it in your heart, any future appreciation will simply be an added bonus—and possibly a handsome one.
Q: How do you see the relationship between fine art, architecture, and luxury interior design evolving in the coming years?
Ron Burkhardt: Art is a lifestyle. Everything you do is a reflection of your soul and personal style. Your clothes, your car, your favorite colors, your home, and of course the art you hang in that home.
A home’s design, décor, and architecture are also reflections of your worldview and vision. I believe we are moving toward a future where these elements become increasingly integrated and seamless, creating environments that fully express who we are.
Q: Color plays a major role in your work, particularly your signature use of blue. What does that color represent to you?
Ron Burkhardt: I can’t really remember when I first bonded with blue. But I do recall wearing blue cavalry outfits and blue Cub Scout uniforms as a kid, and I grew up surrounded by blue skies and blue lakes.
Today it has literally become my brand. More than half the paintings I create contain shades of blue. My homes feature blue accent walls, my cars are midnight blue with ivory interiors, and I own countless blue suits, shirts, jeans, and even blue-tinted sunglasses.
Blue represents serenity, peace, power, and the omnipresence of nature. Yves Klein popularized his famous shade known as Yves Klein Blue, but for me, blue pulsates with emotion and draws its spiritual energy directly from Mother Nature.

Q: When a collector acquires one of your pieces, what do you hope they experience every day they live with it?
Ron Burkhardt: I hope they feel empowered, engaged, and excited to be surrounded by works that affirm their own unique style by displaying art that is different from what others encounter.
I am always honored when someone chooses to bring a piece of my light into their world. They deserve to feel enriched and energized by the shapes and colors I infuse into my paintings. In the end, I hope their spirit feels uplifted and inspired to see the world in fresh ways.
