‘Scooby-Doo’ Live-Action Netflix Series Casts Maxwell Jenkins as Fred, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy
Break out the giant sandwiches! The live-action “Scooby-Doo” series at Netflix has found its Mystery Inc. gang.
Variety has learned that Maxwell Jenkins will play group leader Fred Jones alongside Tanner Hagen as Norville “Shaggy” Rogers and Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley. They will appear with previously announced cast member Mckenna Grace, who is set for the role of Daphne.
Netflix picked up the untitled “Scooby-Doo” series for eight episodes in March 2025. The official logline describes it as a modern reimagining of the popular cartoon show.
“During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy (Hagen) and Daphne (Grace) get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder,” the logline reads. “Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma (Fortson), and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy (Jenkins), they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
The role marks a return to Netflix for Jenkins, who starred in the streamer’s three-season reboot of “Lost in Space” in addition to appearing in the early Netflix original “Sense8.” Since then, Jenkins has appeared in shows like “Reacher” and “The Bondsman” for Amazon, “Dear Edward” at Apple TV, and in films like “Joe Bell” opposite Mark Wahlberg.
Hagen’s past TV credits include the hit HBO Max series “The Pitt” as well as shows like “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” at Paramount+. In film, he will next be seen in the feature “The Man Who Changed the World.” Hagen is also an accomplished singer and dancer, and was previously a member of the group “FuturePop.”
Fortson recently appeared in the first season of the hit HBO Max series “The Pitt” in the role of Kristi Wheeler, a pregnant teen seeking a medical abortion. Early in her career, she appeared in an episode of “The Mindy Project,” with series creator Mindy Kaling recently creating and starring in a Velma adult animated spinoff series for HBO Max. Fortson’s other TV credits include “Togetherness,” “Transparent, and “Tales From the Loop.” In film, she is known for her roles in the two “Ant-Man” Marvel films as well as “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” opposite Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates.
Jenkins is repped by Innovative Artists Entertainment, Gilbertson Entertainment, and Myman Greenspan. Hagen is repped by CESD Talent Agency, Osbrink Talent Agency, and Treadwell Entertainment. Fortson is repped by TalentWorks, WME, and Yorn Levine Barnes.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as writers and showrunners and will also executive produce along with André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner under their Midnight Radio banner. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will executive produce via Berlanti productions. Toby Haynes will executive produce and direct the first episode. Warner Bros. Television will produce. Berlanti Productions is currently under an overall deal at WBTV.
This will not be the first live-action Scooby-Doo project to make it to the screen. Most famously, the “Scooby-Doo” live-action film was released in 2002 and starred Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini, with Neil Fanning voicing Scooby. The film was a box office success, generating over $250 million worldwide. A sequel with the same cast, “Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed,” came out in 2004 and grossed over $180 million. There was also the live-action TV film “Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins” and its sequel that were released in 2009 and 2010.
There have also been a wide range of Scooby-Doo animated projects over the years, beginning with the original cartoon series in the late 1960s. Various incarnations have followed over the years, spanning multiple animated series and films.
