Here are Anna’s 6 Steps to Unlocking your Performance Potential
1. GET ABOVE THE LINE
If you want to unlock your true potential then you must first acknowledge the need for change. In order to change you need two things 1) great self-awareness of where you are stuck and 2) willingness to take action.
Imagine a metaphorical line in Life. Being ‘above’ the line is symbolic of being accountable and taking action. Being ‘below’ the line represents blame, making excuses or being in denial.
You must become hyper self-aware of when you fall ‘below’ the line in Life (which most of us do regularly, since we’re human after all). For example, maybe you’re delaying posting a video on social media out of fear of judgement, or making excuses for why you can’t start your exercise plan. You must learn to clock the ‘below the line’ behaviour – fast – and get back above the line by taking the relevant action.
2. CHOOSE YOUR FOCUS
It’s true…you get what you focus on.
It’s time to take control of the lens through which you’re viewing Life, choosing to focus on solutions over problems, opportunity over obstacles. This requires effort, regular self-regulation and thought-management – skills well worth honing.
A great and simple tip is every morning to set yourself a daily focus. What is it you will achieve that day? This is like programming a sat nav – without doubt, you’re far more likely to stick to the route when you’re focused on the destination, right?
3. EMBRACE A GROWTH MINDSET
Believing you’re a work in progress is paramount if you want to continually unlock your potential. You must acknowledge that this requires effort and that there ain’t no growth in your comfort zone!
You must learn to step out and lean into the ‘growth zone’, embracing the inevitable discomfort that comes with pushing your limits. Remember discomfort equals growth, self-mastery is a Journey, and failing forwards is simply part of the process.
4. CHARGE YOUR OWN SELF-ESTEEM BATTERY
In your quest to step out of your comfort zone regularly, it helps considerably to have a fully charged ‘self-esteem battery’. The question is, who or what is currently charging that battery? For the majority of us, we rely on external factors such as validation and good outcomes to do the job, and this is dangerous. The real game changer is learning to charge your self-esteem yourself, internally.
How?….By paying intention to, and collecting evidence of, your small wins, and then linking this evidence to an affirmation.
At the end of every day, ask yourself ‘What did I do well today?…and what does that say about me?’. As an example, your answer could be ‘I posted my first LinkedIn video…I am capable and courageous.’ These reflections will help charge your self-esteem battery from within, resulting in greater confidence, consistency and performance over time.
5. CHALLENGE YOUR AUTO-PILOT
Did you know that roughly 90% of your thoughts are the same as yesterday? Shocking I know! Us humans are often stuck in ‘autopilot’ as our neurological programmes (often installed from a young age) spit out – on repeat – the same thoughts, feelings, behaviour and results… as always (cue that well known Albert Einstein quote!).
It’s time to check in with your autopilot regularly, raising your self-awareness of where it is not serving you well. Start to notice bad habits and feelings (for example procrastination and the accompanying sense of dread) and take one small action to challenge your ‘norm’.
For example, rather than putting off starting a perceived ‘boring’ task (as you usually might), start by starting! You don’t need to complete the task but taking one small step in the right direction is likely to drive momentum and further motivation to complete the task.
6. PRAISE PROGESS!
Take time to stop, reflect and recognise the progress you’ve made in challenging your autopilot. It’s a real achievement. At the end of the day ask yourself ‘What progress have I made today? And what does that say about me?’.
Remember, your brain must see repeated new evidence that you can do the thing you thought you couldn’t (in this case starting a task without procrastinating). It’s time to build the belief that you can. The more you praise progress over time in specific areas (i.e. reduction of procrastination), the quicker you’ll create a new – more high performing – autopilot.
