Forty years ago after its theatrical debut in August 1986, Hasbro’s beloved animated classic The Transformers: The Movie is returning to theaters for a special 40th anniversary celebration, bringing generations of fans together to celebrate the landmark film.
We’re excited to invite fans to join us for this special event, where you’ll have the opportunity to see The Transformers: The Movie back on the big screen, along with an exclusive advance screening of the brand-new animated short Optimus Prime: Awakening. The short features an original voice performance by the late and legendary Peter Cullen as well as Frank Welker and is directed by Josh Wassung (Predator: Killer of Killers). You’ll get to see it before it officially arrives in theaters on Transformers Day, September 17. After the screening, Wassung will take the stage for an exclusive Q&A!
The evening will not only celebrate the lasting impact of the Transformers franchise, but also honor the memory and legacy of Peter Cullen, a voice that defined generations. Over the course of his extraordinary career, Cullen lent his voice to creatures and characters great and small, from Optimus Prime to the iconic clicks of the Predator, Venger in the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons animated series, the Mogwai in Gremlins, Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, and so many more.
If you’re in Los Angeles, don’t miss your chance to hang out with us for this epic night of action and adventure! Join us for this special screening of The Transformers: The Movie, followed by the premiere of Wassung’s animated short Optimus Prime: Awakening on Tuesday, September 8. The screening will take place at the Landmark Sunset Theatre and begin at 7:00 p.m. Afterwards, our own Steve Weintraub will moderate the Q&A with Wassung.
In addition, after the Q&A, we’ll have two video setups in the theater lobby to record fan reactions to the new animated short, capture what it was like seeing the 1986 movie back on the big screen, and give attendees the opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of Peter Cullen.

Revisiting ‘The Transformers: The Movie’
For the uninitiated, The Transformers: The Movie is a feature-length animated movie, written by Ron Friedman (Fantastic Four: The Animated Series) and directed by Nelson Shin (My Little Pony Tales). In the movie, the Autobots face a colossal opponent like never before when the planet-consuming robot, Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles), sets its sights on the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. There’s no rest for the wicked, though, and while they battle this enormous threat, the Decepticons issue an all-out attack!
Spoiler for new fans: Optimus Prime was defeated in an epic showdown with his arch-nemesis Megatron. Decades later, the movie has only grown more legendary through home video re-releases, theatrical revivals, and generations of fans passing the Matrix of Leadership down to new viewers.
What Is ‘Optimus Prime: Awakening’?
In Wassung’s animated short, Optimus Prime: Awakening, voice acting legends Peter Cullen and Frank Welker (Scooby Doo, Where Are You!) return as Optimus Prime and Megatron/Soundwave, respectively, in entirely new and original performances. This never-before-seen animated short will debut following select anniversary screenings of The Transformers: The Movie. Optimus Prime: Awakening is a 12-minute love letter to the Transformers community that builds on the acclaimed storytelling and visuals of The Transformers: The Movie (1986) film.
Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment invite you to celebrate Cullen’s legacy and experience an iconic cultural moment from the franchise’s past while exploring its future on the big screen.
